As a media investment company, eMedia Holdings is in a unique position to both educate and inform its audiences through the various companies it operates. Our current social responsibility strategy concentrates on the overarching theme of education. More specifically, we aim to encourage youth to attend and participate in school so that they are afforded better opportunities in the future.
The group created an umbrella called UNITe, to look after all of its CSR initiatives. Some of UNITe’s initiatives and partners include:
e.tv, eNCA and YFM broadcast Public Service Announcements at no airtime cost to non-profit organisations. PSA’s provide much-needed exposure to organisations that cannot afford television advertising to raise awareness. Through YFM, e.tv and eNCA these organisations, ranging from Hospice Palliative Care to the South African Guide Dogs Association have been able to reach a wide number of listeners and viewers at no charge.
The Dreamfields Project uses the power of football in South Africa to leverage significant investment in soccer facilities and equipment for township and rural schools. In addition, Dreamfields distributes Dream Bags to schools in previously disadvantaged areas across the country.
OpenView HD in Schools
In partnership with the Department of Basic Education, in 2014 UNITe installed 808 OpenView HD decoders in remote schools, providing access to educational channels like Mindset Learning, DaVinci Learning and eToonz+. To date this initiative has provided 750 government schools with access to quality educational television content.
For the last two years UNITe has been the charity partner of e.tv’s Charity Showdown football tournament. All the proceeds of this tournament are donated to The Lunchbox Fund.
eMedia’s staff take great pride in getting involved with CSR activities. Events that often receive special attention are Tekkie Tax, the Santa Shoebox Project and the CANSA Shavathon.
